My wife got “saved” two years ago, but I’ve seen no frenzy of Bible reading like I experienced. She knows nothing about the Bible. I decided to clamp my mouth shut, and trust in the Holy Spirit to do his work, without me imposing laws on her that she should read her Bible and attended church. Any comments’
What does it mean to be saved’ In the first place, what are we saved from’ Matthew 1:21 “And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.” Jesus did not come to save us in our sins but from our sins. If a person is drowning, we can not save that person by leaving them in the water. We cannot even save them by pulling them out and then leaving the water in them. The only way to save someone is to pull them out of the water and then draw the water out of them. In order for Jesus to save me from sin, He must pull me out of sin and then take the sin out of me. Only then am I truly saved from sin.
How are we saved from sin’ What power saves us’ 1 John 5:4 “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.” Without faith it is impossible to obtain victory over anything. But with true faith, we can overcome the world and the sin in the world. But How is it possible for me to obtain this type of genuine faith’ Romans 10:17 “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Without the word of God I cannot possibly have the faith that brings salvation to my soul. Psalm 119:11 “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” When the Word of God is hidden in my heart or mind, that word effects me in such a way that I will not sin against God. That power comes directly from the word of God. So first the word cleanses me and then gives me the power not to disobey. Psalm 119:9. “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way’ by taking heed thereto according to thy word.” The only way to have this change in heart and mind is through the sacred scriptures. We cannot change ourselves, that is impossible. That change is made in us through the meditation of the Bible.
Since the power is in the word of God, then we know that a person who has accepted salvation thirsts for the word of God. Matthew 5:6 “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.” This earnest desire results in finding the knowledge of God. Proverbs 2:3-5 “Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.” This shows an intense hungering and thirsting for the knowledge in the word of God. And what will you find in the end’ We will find the knowledge of God. Why is it so important to find the knowledge of God’ John 17:3 “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” Knowing God is eternal life. If I do not know God I do not possess eternal life. Clearly without diligent Bible study on the part of the individual who has such an opportunity, such a person cannot be saved.
Many honestly are saved but are not instructed in true religion and so they begin to loose their experience and need encouragement in the way of salvation. Let me give some practical advise on helping a spouse in Bible study without being obnoxious. By telling a spouse you are not converted does not help in the husband wife situations very well. We must ourselves have a deep spiritual relationship with Christ. I sometimes find that a person wants their spouse to be spiritual when they themselves are excusing themselves from their waywardness. The Bible calls this hypocrisy. Matthew 23:1-3 “Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples, Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat: All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.” So we ourselves must live that exemplary life for Christ. 1 Timothy 4:12 “Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.” The most important thing is to teach by producing a godly example through the power of our Saviour.
As a man, you are the head of the household. Ephesians 5:23 “For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.” When I speak of the man being the head of the wife, I am not speaking of a dictator. Ephesians 5:25 “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.” The question we as men need to ask ourselves is: Am I willing to die for my wife’ When we are willing to die for our wife, then we can proceed to the next step. Without this attitude, we will tend to command and dictate and that only produces rebellion. This is where following the example of the ancient Hebrews in holding a morning and evening sacrifice is so valuable. Back in those days, the priest would offer a sacrifice every morning and evening while the entire congregation would wait in worship .Today we do not have a literal sacrificial lamb to bring to the altar but we do have a Saviour who is our sacrificial lamb. 1 Peter 1:19 “But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.” We need to present the sacrifice of Christ before the family every morning and evening. How do we bring Jesus as our sacrificial lamb every morning and evening in a practical way’ John 1:14 “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” Jesus is the Word of God. As Jesus is the Word of God, we need to present the Word of God to our families every morning and evening. Set aside a time every day for that morning and evening worship. Invite the family members to the presence of Jesus every day. In reading the word of God together, that word will bring about the conversion of the family members. If you need some help in gathering the Bible verses that will have the desired effect, I would suggest a book like Desire of Ages that goes through the life of Christ in simple language as a tremendous benefit. In this way you may lead and not just command.
